Three mailings with phony or falsified return addresses landed in the mailboxes of first ward residents during last few days before the election. It was an unsuccessful smear campaign against councilman Doug Bern. Illegal election posters also popped up on telephone poles across almost every street in the first ward. The posters were illegal because they did not identify the name of the individual, committee, or business that financed the advertisement, as required by state and federal regulations.
Mail fraud is a federal crime. We hope that the Postal Inspector, State Attorney, Bergen County Prosecutor, and the Attorney General Office in Washington, D.C. will thoroughly investigate this serious matter, so that it will not happen again.
Whoever was trying to fool the voters, which we believe was not the candidate alone but his supporters, warrants a complaint with the Board of Elections in Trenton. This process takes about 90 days from the day of the election.
Hopefully, in a timely fashion, we will know who was behind this scheme.
