WHISPERS AND SHOUTS

State Senator Byron Baer who lives in Englewood may be retiring after he serves two additional years.  The buzz is that Mayor Paul Fader wants his seat in Trenton.

Many homeowners and merchants agree what we truly need in our downtown district is more parking.  The EHOA receives notes, faxes and emails from hundreds of homeowners asking us to lobby for more parking.

The former Francisco’s Nursery now Victoria’s Nursery on County Road in Tenafly located very close to the Englewood boarder has been sold.  We believe that a developer has approval to build 45 townhouses on that site.

Many residents in Leonia are collecting signatures for a petition to recall Mayor Paul Kaufman.  For this task 25% of the registered voters must sign the petition for a referendum to be on the ballot.  Those collecting signatures are complaining because they found out that numerous registered voters are deceased or moved out of town.  This is an ongoing problem in many municipalities including ours.

Elizabeth Morrow School is a new owner of a home at 516 Next Day Hill Drive.  This home sold for approximately $1,280,000.  Elizabeth Morrow School is a beneficial use.

William Rupp our city solicitor is also Leonia’s Board of Adjustments attorney.  This fact could create a conflict of interest and our city council may have to retain outside council to defend our city in the lawsuit Leonia vs. Englewood.

CONGRATULATIONS!  Larry Lubin will serve as a trustee on the Board of Education.   Mr. Lubin is a retired actuary and a well respected member of our community.

THANK YOU!  Numerous homeowners wish to thank Councilman Michael Wildes for fulfilling the request for swing sets and play equipment installed in Madison Park.

For the second time, our co-president Eugenia Vogel contributed generously to the Dwight Morrow High School Scholarship Fund.

Our co-president Ruth Baum is the new secretary for the Community Chest.

A propose commuter light rail could help Englewood.  This rail is known as the Northern Branch Line.  There are different proposed routes being studied.  Some do not include Englewood.  First ward Councilman and County Freeholder Douglas Bern is working hard on behalf of Englewood.  We encourage our members to write comments to New Jersey Transit at One Penn Plaza, East Newark, NJ 07105-2246 by August 15, 2001.  Further information is available by calling (866) 658-9874.

WONDERFUL DEEDS: A homeowner who is a public school grandparent wrote us the following note:

I’m amazed that the local press has not reported to date the generous gift 54 students from the middle school received from a homeowner in Englewood who wishes to remain anonymous and was a graduate of Dwight Morrow High School.  During two weekends 25 boys and 29 girls traveled to Jefferson Lake Camp and High and Mighty Stables.  During the month of June a group of 6th and 7th  grade of boys and girls went on a full day and overnight camping trip at Jefferson Lake Camp.  Also in June the Englewood Middle Schools a 6th grade group of girls went to the High and Mighty Stables.  Both trips included great activities for the kids such as swimming, horseback riding, Olympics/dancing, fishing, kayak-paddle, campfire songs and many more activities.  The kids had a great time.  The chaperones were Bobbi Faycik, Director of the Englewood Summer Enrichment Program and Kay Fairfield, CPR First Aide, fully certified EMT and works on the ambulance corp. in Englewood.  I wonder why good deeds go unnoticed!
