Englewood’s taxes are very high compared to other towns in Bergen County. How is our money spent? Are we getting good value? One way to view our budget is to compare it to other towns of similar size. We will be featuring different departments in each issue of this newsletter. These comparisons are of the municipal expenses only; the school budgets are separate.
First, how does the overall total compare? This comparison includes the four towns in Bergen County that have about the same population and size as Englewood: Ridgewood, Bergenfield, Lodi and Garfield. We also include Teaneck, since it has many similarities, even though it is much larger than Englewood.

Because these towns do not have exactly the same population, a better comparison is to adjust these numbers to Englewood’s population.

The last column shows how much smaller the other towns are as a percent of Englewood’s budget, after adjusting for town population.
Englewood’s municipal budget is about twice as large as those from Bergenfield, Lodi, and Garfield – about $20 million more! It is $10 million greater than Ridgewood and $13 million greater than Teaneck when adjusted for population.
How do we manage to spend so much more than other towns? Our next newsletter will compare some of these expenses.
