New Board of Education Votes to Drop Lawsuit against Englewood’s Charter School

After years of expensive lawsuits, the Englewood Charter School (Englewood on the Palisades) won an appeal in Superior Court and a victory from the newly elected Board of Education who voted to drop any further litigation against the school.

The former politically appointed Board of Education started this lawsuit three years ago with the support of School Superintendent Joyce Banes and Mayor Paul Fader.  As a result, hundreds of thousands of our educational dollars have been wasted by this expensive and fruitless lawsuit.  Instead these tax dollars that would have been wasted in continued litigation can now be used to help our students and improve our schools.

The Board of Education President said “The charter school… makes the town more attractive providing competition and choices in education…  We’ve lost this legal fight at every step and we were going to lose if we continued.”  (Source: The Press Journal. May 31, 2001)

We applaud the Board of Education, including our newly elected members, who voted not to continue this useless lawsuit. This is a wonderful victory for the Englewood Charter School students as well as the homeowners and taxpayers of Englewood.
