I was born in San Sebastian, Spain in the heart of the Basque region. For decades the Basque Provinces as well as other cities throughout the country have been lashed by terrorism and the government to date has failed to end it.
This invisible evil organization is connected to other terrorist groups internationally and is not composed only of Basque citizens but of men and women from different nationalities.
Years ago, they committed acts of terrorism against members of the government. But lately, the private sector is deeply affected. My family, friends and business associates live there and I return to San Sebastian from time to time. Bombs, assassinations and kidnappings continue to occur throughout Spain. Killing of civilians occurs as bombs explode at specific times triggered by remote controls. The bombs are in empty or occupied, well-kept cars or vans, on streets where affluent residents, diplomats, judges and elected officials work or live.
Living with evil forces has taught me the true meaning of injustice, horror and pain. I have seen cars explode. I have heard innocent bystanders shout and cry at the same time as myself. I have smelled the odor of burned metal and human flesh. Like other human beings that have lived through violence, I have developed a strong resilience. My spirit, instincts and passion were never broken. And, I am confident that yours will remain intact. I am not a hero, but I can call myself a true survivor.
The EHOA has developed clear means of communication among homeowners through our newsletter, our meetings, and our website EnglewoodHomeOwners.com. This has been important for local issues, but is also extremely helpful when signs of violence appear to be close. The EHOA is also opening communication links with other homeowner associations across the country. A new password to the website will be issued to members in good standing to access updated information.
Local issues mean nothing when horror knocks at your door, yet we must remain focused.
The fact that our country has been attacked by the most brutal act of terrorism known to date has awakened memories that have rested dormant in my soul. We must use caution, but at the same time go on with our lives. We must reflect on the consequences of this heinous act and exercise prudence. Above all, we must embrace an optimistic attitude each and every day and we must be truthful with our children so they can understand. We must immediately contact police when we see or hear something that appears to be suspicious.
My heart and prayers goes out to those families who have lost or are missing loved ones. I thank God for allowing my brother-in-law Alan who was in the disaster area, to returned home safely. I pray that our government, now united, will do its part in protecting us. As a result of my experiences with terrorism I firmly believe that the private sector should do its share as well.
Terrorism is born out of hate and its goal is to destroy capitalism, freedom and democracy. An act of war against our country has just occurred a few miles from our homes. The planes that destroyed WTC buildings flew over our sky. We the homeowners of Englewood must stand united and continue to be strong.
