In some cases, an adult who is not the parent or legal guardian of a child may register a child in the Englewood school system.  First they must prove they are legally domiciled in Englewood (a “resident”) i.e. they own, rent, or lease a house or apartment in Englewood or they are living permanently with someone who owns, rents, or leases a house or apartment in Englewood.  A deed or lease and a utility bill in the name of the adult is typical proof of residency.    Secondly, the resident must prove (with or without an affidavit) that they are responsible for the welfare of the child being registered and that the child resides in the Englewood resident’s home (IRS Proof of Dependency).

Affidavit: A written statement signed in the presence of a notary public e.g. “I Jane Brown am responsible for the following students:  John, Mary, etc.”  (To substantiate this affidavit, these students should be on the resident’s IRS income tax form as dependents, although this is not required to obtain the affidavit.)

Affidavit Host:  A resident presents at school registration an affidavit that they are responsible for the welfare of a child being registered for school and that the child resides in the Englewood resident’s home.

Non-Affidavit Host:  A resident verbally claims at school registration that they are responsible for the welfare of a child being registered for school and that the child resides in the Englewood resident’s home.  The resident must provide further documentation that they are truly responsible for the welfare of the child (e.g. a current income tax return showing the child as a dependent) and that the child resides in the Englewood resident’s home.
